SEAWORLD LIES

Head SeaWorld Trainer Lies To California Board Of Education
May 23, 2015

More concerned students and parents have been speaking out against field trips and school events held at SeaWorld since the release of the documentary "Blackfish" revealed that killer whales are not a species suited for captivity.

The Poway Unified School District in California is no exception. In 2014, a student created a petition to halt field trips to SeaWorld. The issue has sparked a lot of debate which ultimately led to a recent meeting of the San Diego County School District which, in part, addressed the issue of animal welfare at SeaWorld.
One of the individuals who testified in front of the board was Robin Sheets, a current head killer whale trainer at SeaWorld with 26 years of experience.

A resolution was submitted to ask SeaWorld to seek more humane ways of helping with marine mammal conservation. It was tabled indefinitely but some of the testimonies were captured here. This is Poway School District.

Here are two things that Robin Sheets lied about during his testimony:
"We have never fed the whales any kind of medicine to make them calm down."

Court documents that were released in 2014 say otherwise. According to these documents, three whales were put on Diazepam (Valium) to "mellow" them out due to aggression and attempts to mate with a calf.
"What's wrong with shows? Shows are fun. We don't have a script...We have a board that we kind of write a light script on, we throw that out. Basically it's just a big playtime..."
According to the Shamu Stadium Trainer's Manual: "a procedure is in place for 'lines' approval. Show scripts should be thoroughly rehearsed and approved by Entertainment before a trainer is permitted to perform them in a show." Anyone who views a SeaWorld show can tell that the show is well rehearsed and scripted. It is not a "big playtime" and the scripts haven't been "thrown out". Certain tricks are performed at specific points during the songs and each show is nearly identical to the next.

To top off his testimony, Robin Sheets referred to the film "Blackfish" as "social terrorism," and argued that children who are not fans of SeaWorld are being manipulated by adults with an agenda. What an insult to the students and parents who "dare" to question SeaWorld! Consumers are free to vote with their hard-earned dollars. Nobody is obligated to support SeaWorld and that certainly doesn't make them a "terrorist."
